Welcome back to the “Dressing for your Body Shape” series! If you missed the intro post, you can view it here to get a general idea of the different body shapes and what yours may be. Most of us, when deciding what to wear, make several considerations including the weather, our mood, and the activities of the day. When considering your body shape, it is very important to plan your look based on the feature that you want to accentuate.
I have spent the last few weeks giving in-depth advice on how to look chic no matter your measurements. Today is the last of the Body Shape Series, but if you still have questions about your body shape or how to dress it, don’t hesitate to reach out to get advice from an expert—free of charge!
Today we are talking about the shape that is considered to be most balanced—the hourglass shape. Hourglass shaped women have well-proportioned upper and lower bodies with a narrow waist. They are inclined to gain weight all over the body in particular the hips and chest area. Some of the most famous hour glass figures in the world of pop culture are Marilyn Monroe, Halle Berry, & Sophia Vergara. Additionally, this is the shape that many are shooting for when they have body reconstructive surgeries such as the BBL and fat transfers to the hips.

Dressing the Hourglass Body Shape
Although the hourglass is considered the most balanced and “ideal” shape, there are still some key fashion thoughts to consider when dressing this shape. See our top 5 ways to highlight this body shape below and download our free, quick tip sheet to reference when shopping for the Hourglass Body Shape.

What to Avoid
Avoid boxy cuts that don’t accentuate curves—instead consider adding a belt or tie around the waist. Steer clear of side-opening pockets on the side of hips and fabrics that are too stiff or bulky. High necklines should be avoided for the hourglass shape as they make the bust look larger (and not in a good way). Skirts, dresses, or pants with pleating at the hips will also not be flattering for this shape.
Medical Moment: Keep in mind that your body shape is determined based on both genetics and environment. Your bone structure plays a large part in your figure as well as diet and exercise. You will find success in planning looks that find balance in your current shape—even if it’s not necessarily the one that you desire.
